PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silver halide emulsion having an improved grain size distribution, a reduced proportion of non-tabular multiple twin grains and improved sensitivity, graininess, preservability and production lot reproducibility. SOLUTION: In a method for preparing a silver halide emulsion, crystal formation of grains is carried out in a reactive solution containing a dispersion medium, and while the reactive solution during crystal formation is heated, (a) a silver halide solvent is added and aging is carried out, (b) silver ions and halide ions are supplied and grain growth is carried out, (c) the pH is adjusted to 8.0-14.0 and then adjusted to 1.0 to <8.0, (d) average mixing time T<SB>1</SB>in nuclei formation and average mixing time T<SB>2</SB>in the aging and growth satisfy the relation of 0<T<SB>1</SB>/T<SB>2</SB><1, and (e) concentration and addition of water are carried out under heating and cooling during the grain growth.
