PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roll material for hot rolling, which solves problems in a conventional hot-rolling roll material of a high-speed steel and a hot-rolling roll of the high-speed steel, adequately keeps the abrasion resistance, and is superior in surface roughening resistance, thermal cracking resistance, and crack propagation resistance, and to provide the roll for hot rolling using the same. SOLUTION: The roll material for hot rolling has a composition comprising, by wt.%, 1.2-2.0% C, 3.0-4.5% Si (excluding 3.0), 0.2-1.0% Mn, 3.0-5.0% Cr, 1.0-4.0% Mo, 1.0-4.0% W, 1.0-6.0% V, and the balance substantially Fe, while satisfying Si%≥C%×2.
