PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alkoxybenzoic acid in a high yield, which is applicable to mass production. SOLUTION: A benzoic acid derivative represented by general formula (1) (R1-R4 are each independently a 1-6C saturated alkoxy group, dialkylamino group or a hydrogen atom) is treated with a halogenating agent to give a halogenated benzoic acid represented by general formula (2) (R1-R4 are each as shown above; X is a halogen atom), which is then treated with a metal alkoxide to give an alkoxybenzoic acid represented by general formula (3) (R1-R4 and X are each as shown above; R5 is a 1-6C unsaturated or saturated alkyl group).
