PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a loading device for roll of paper and a printer whereby a roll of paper is not wasted and the roll of paper can be readily loaded. SOLUTION: There is disclosed a loading device of a roll of paper 6 wherein the roll of paper is conveyed to a discharge hole 7 in a condition that the bifolded edge of the roll of paper 6 is made to be the leading edge 6b. A paper sensor PS for detecting a tip 6a of the roll of paper 6 of which the edge is bifolded is provided to the loading device. After the tip 6a is detected, the roll of paper 6 is conveyed by an amount corresponding to a length which is slightly longer than a distance of a paper path from the paper sensor PS to the discharge hole 7. As a result, it is possible to convey the bifolded tip 6a to a position slightly away from the discharge hole 7 irrespective of the position of the tip 6a of the roll of paper which is held by a user in order to load the roll of paper 6.
