PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alert a user that a correct cartridge is not mounted in a cartridge slot in a cartridge replacement work executed during a printing operation. SOLUTION: The printer judges the kind of the cartridge mounted in a cartridge slot, converts the color based on the kind of the cartridge mounted in the cartridge slot, executes a printing operation on a printing paper, monitors the residual amount of a recording material kept in the cartridge during the printing operation so as to demand a user of a replacement work of the cartridge judged to have a residual amount of a predetermined value or less by interrupting the printing operation being executed in the case the residual amount is judged to be a predetermined value or less, and outputs a predetermined alert the user that the kind of the cartridge mounted newly in the cartridge slot is judged to be different from the kind of the cartridge mounted prior thereto.
