PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of forming a multilayered coating film in which a coating film exhibiting excellent appearance is formed by using a water based intermediate coating material having an increased viscosity. SOLUTION: In the multilayered coating film forming method composed of a process (1) of applying a water based intermediate coating material to form an uncured intermediate coating film, a process (2) of applying a water based base coating material to form an uncured base coating film, a process (3) of applying a clear coating material to form an uncured clear coating film and a process (4) of heating and curing simultaneously to form the multilayered coating film, the water based intermediate coating material is composed of an acrylic emulsion resin, a melamine resin, dispersing agent pigment dispersion paste and a thickener and the coating film formed by the process (1), the process (2) and the process (3) contains≤7×10<SP>-6</SP>mmol total volatile basic material per 1 mm<SP>2</SP>unit surface area.
