PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for applying a water based coating material by which an allowable range of air conditioning in the coating of the water based coating material is expanded to remarkably reduce a subsequent preheat process. SOLUTION: In the method of applying the water based coating material on the surface of a material to be coated by a coating gun, the material to be coated and the sprayed coating material particle deposited on the surface of the material to be coated is irradiated with heat ray during a time just before the application of the water based coating material up to the finish of the coating to control the solid portion of the deposited coating material. The coating apparatus is constructed by arranging a heater for heating the material to be coated just before the coating, a coater having the coating gun for spraying the water based coating material to the material to be coated and a heating apparatus possessing a heat ray heater for irradiating the sprayed coating material particle to be deposited on the surface of the material to be coated.
