PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shape detection method of build-up welding object useful when carrying out an automatic build-up welding cooling wall panel which has relatively complicated shape and has a large changes in shape.SOLUTION: When carrying out a build-up welding on the surface of cooling wall panel P, the shape detection method of a build-up welding object includes the steps of: detecting a surface shape from one top face of a coolant pipe 1 to the other top face of the other coolant pipe 1 via a joint part of a fin 2 in neighboring coolant pipes 1; setting approximate circles SC and SC' of a part along the outer periphery of the coolant pipes 1 in the detected surface shape; determining the vertexes of the approximate circles as inflection points C and C' on the top faces; determining the points at which the changing amount in differences on the approximate circles and the surface shape exceeds a predetermined value as inflection points A and A' of one side edge of a fillet weld 3; and determining the points at which the changing amount separates from the approximate straight line SL of the fin 2 exceeding a predetermined value as inflection points B and B' of the other side edge of the fillet weld 3.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
