PURPOSE:To accurately detect an empty area even in a place where an empty area is difficult to detect such as, for example an outdoor parking place or outdoor warehouse. CONSTITUTION:The empty area detector comprises a preprocessing section 4 for producing a mask picture image for separating a parking area in a parking place according to picture image data obtained by photographing the whole parking place and for producing a labelling picture image of each parking area according to the mask picture image as produced, a metering section 6 for determining the average concentration and the concentration dispersion for each one parking area according to the labelling picture image as produced, and a decision section 7 for detecting an empty area in the parking place while comparing the determined average, concentration and the concentration dispersion with a reference average concentration and concentration dispersion. |
