<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical transmission element for an optical communication in which a wavelength dividing multiplex transmission can be performed without using an optical frequency combining/separating unit and to provide a photodetecting element for the communication, an optical transmission/ photodetecting element for the communication and an optical communication system using them. <P>SOLUTION: The optical transmission element for the optical communication comprises at least two or more surface PD layers 20 having different optical absorption wavelengths, at least two or more VCSEL layers 30 having different laser oscillation wavelengths, sequentially laminated on a semiconductor substrate 10, and optical transmission/photodetecting elements 100 in which an optical fiber 40 is coupled to the layer 20 or the layer 30 operating in a shortest wavelength, are provided at both ends of the fiber 40, thereby performing the optical communication. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
