PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved method for controlling a drive unit having an internal combustion engine wherein vibration of the internal combustion engine at an interruption is reduced, and an improved apparatus. SOLUTION: The method of controlling the drive unit (1) having the internal combustion engine (5) comprises the steps of compressing air or a mixture of fuel and air by a compressing means (15), particularly by a piston, in a combustion member (10) and reducing the quantity of fuel supply when the engine (5) is interrupted. The method of controlling the unit (1) starts decreasing the load of the compressing means (15) in addition to decreasing the quantity of the fuel supply when the engine (5) is interrupted.
