PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that air fuel ratio tends to be lean because response of an output indicating change from rich air fuel ratio to lean one is worse than response of an output indicating from lean one to rich one in a state immediately after an air fuel ratio sensor is activated, thereby varying rotation. SOLUTION: A method of feedback controlling the air fuel ratio of an internal combustion engine comprises the processes of comparing the level of a signal outputted after the air fuel ratio sensor is activated with a level of judgement, judging whether the air fuel ratio is rich or lean on the basis of the comparison result, and feedback-controlling the air fuel ratio on the basis of the result of judgement. The method further comprises the process of judging active condition of the air fuel ratio sensor so as to hardly make a judgement that the judgement level during a period from the judgement of the active condition until a predetermined time is richer than the usual judgement level in the active condition.
