<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an initialization device and an initialization method for an optical recording medium which are capable of reducing initialization irregularities caused by optical interference generated in the initialization, without deteriorating an information record reproducing signal characteristic of a record layer on a recording medium with a plurality of optical record layers. <P>SOLUTION: This device is the initialization device for the optical recording medium in which at least the first optical record layer and the second optical record layer are laminated via a middle layer on a substrate from an optical irradiation side, and at least the first optical record layer has phase change recording material, the device has an initialization laser beam light source LD and an optical system including an objective lens OL to condense an initialization laser beam LTI from the initialization laser beam light source on the optical record layer for the optical recording medium, the initialization laser beam LTI to be incident on the objective lens OL by a phase difference generating element PH is configured to be half-wave length shifted out of phase in one area P and the other area Q of an entrance pupil divided into two regions. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
