PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a unit, a system and the like capable of transmitting/ receiving data by a proper authentication method by taking into consideration data importance, a type of an authentication method that the opposite device has and the like. SOLUTION: A STB (set top box) 1 having a data importance judging means 3 for judging the importance of data 2, a transmitting-side authentication selecting means 6 for selecting one kind of rules from a transmitting-side multiple authentication rule storing means 5 on the basis of the judgment results, and a transmitting-side authenticating means 7 for carrying out authentication on the basis of selected authentication rules, and a TV 9 having an authentication requesting means 12 for making an authentication request, a receiving-side authentication selecting means 15 for selecting the same authentication rules selected by the transmitting side from a receiving-side multiple authentication rule storage means 14, and a receiving-side authenticating means 13 for carrying out authentication on the basis of the selected authentication rules are included.
