PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video audio recording and reproducing apparatus capable of storing up to just preceding moving picture data even on the occurrence of an unforeseen situation such as destruction of a file on the way of photographing. SOLUTION: The video audio recording and reproducing apparatus is provided with a recording means for dividing consecutive moving picture data into a plurality of independent moving picture files and recording them to a recording medium 60. The recording means is provided with: a residual capacity detection means for detecting the residual capacity of the recording medium 60; and a continuity detection means for detecting the continuity of the moving picture files, and overwrite-records a moving picture file newly generated on the oldest recorded moving picture file when the residual capacity of the recording medium becomes small. The recording and reproducing apparatus is further provided with a reproduction means for consecutively and sequentially reproduces a plurality of the moving picture files recorded on the recording medium 60 as a series of moving pictures.
