PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image with high quality wherein a density difference and a border line or the like are not conspicuous even when an image is read while an imaging area is split. SOLUTION: A correction means of the image reader wherein an imaging area of a photoelectric conversion element for storing electric charges in response to a transmission or reflection luminous quantity of an original image and outputting a signal to a prescribed transfer section is divided into a plurality of areas and a signal is outputted independently by each of a plurality of the imaging division areas, corrects each imaging area on the basis of a mean value of signal outputs at a dark state of the respective imaging areas. Correction of each imaging area to eliminate an output difference on the basis of the mean value of the signal outputs at the dark state by each imaging area can obtain an image with high quality wherein no difference takes place between the imaging areas and no border line is recognized in the case of composing output signals obtained from a plurality of the imaging areas to obtain one image.
