PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenite-containing free cutting stainless steel which has hot workability and cold workability not inferior to those of the conventional stainless steel in addition to corrosion resistance, and remarkably improved machinability, and has remarkably improved outgas resistance. SOLUTION: The austenite-containing free cutting stainless steel contains, by mass, 2 to 30% Ni, 12 to 30% Cr and 0.02 to 0.4% C. Then, provided that respective mass contents of Ti, Zr, C, S and Se are defined as WTi, WZr, WC, WS and WSe, WTi+0.52WZr is 0.03 to 3 mass%, At least either of 0.01 to 0.7 mass% S and 0.01 to 0.5 mass% Se is contained, and, 0.4≤4×WC/(WTi+0.52×WZr)≤1.2 is satisfied. In the case drill cuttability is seriously considered, 0.5≤1.5×(WS+0.40WSe)/(WTi+0.52×WZr)≤1.2 is set, and in the case hot workability is seriously considered, 0.2≤1.5×(WS+0.40WSe)/(WTi+0.52×WZr)≤0.5 is set.
