<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elliptical polarizing plate which is improvers visual field angle of a liquid crystal display apparatus in an OCB system, HAN system, and the like, has a fast response, to provide an elliptical polarizing plate whose surface hardness is equal or higher than the pensile hardness of 3H and, in some cases, is equal to or higher than 4H and curl and brittle properties are improved improved, and to provide a liquid crystal display using the elliptical polarizing plate. <P>SOLUTION: The elliptical polarizing plate has at least one hardcoated layer where product of the surface elastic modulus of the hardcoated layer and the cube of the thickness of the hardcorted layer is equal to or more than 30 kPamm<SP>3</SP>and is less than 700 kPamm<SP>3</SP>, and is made of an optical compensating film made of a polarizer and an optical anisotropic layer where orientation of a discotic liquid crystal is fixed to a transparent support. In the elliptical polarizing plate, the values of Re (0°), Re (-40°), and Re (40°) for indicating optical anisotropy in the optical compensation film are within 35±25 nm, 35±25 nm, and 105±55 nm each. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
