PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reading apparatus for using a read means or an input means for a book original so as to detect a size of the book original and limit its scanning range to be a required minimum range thereby performing high- speed read scanning and stable page turnover. SOLUTION: The reading apparatus has a page turnover means for turning over pages of a book original spared and placed on an original placing part of an original platen one by one page, an original read means for scanning the original face of the book original to read original information, and a book size detection means capable of turning over pages of the original placed on the original placing part and detecting the spread size, and the reading apparatus decides a scanning range from the read start position to the read end position of the original read means on the basis of a detection value of the book size detection means.
