PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the position of a rotating shaft such as a cam-shaft, a crankshaft, or the like with high precision. SOLUTION: This position detector is provided with a tooth-shaped plate 34 which has a magnetic pattern arranged at specified intervals and is composed so that the magnetic pattern moves in the direction of the arrangement, a cam position sensor 3 which detects the magnetic field of the magnetic pattern and generates an output in accordance with the movement of the magnetic pattern, a waveform shaping means which shapes the raw output of the position sensor 32 into a rectangular wave 38, and a correcting means which performs correction so that the pulse interval of the rectangular wave 38 is in conformity with a desired design interval.
