摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a network performance measurement and analysis architecture which is scalable to a large scale network such as the Internet, but is not burdened by large measurement overhead. SOLUTION: A network performance (for example, latency and bandwidth) measurement infrastructure for a large scale network is based on self-organized probing groups of devices. Each group of the devices has a lead device for measuring network characteristics and shares the measurement information with other devices. This grouping method provides required information for individual devices while reducing the amount of network bandwidth required for sufficient measurement. This system utilizes a new multicast-based algorithm adopted for both intra-group performance measurement and inter-group performance measurement. A measurement group (MeGroup) is dynamic and is self- formed and uses a set of heuristic algorithms to optimize dynamic grouping. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
