<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable an optical pickup to read or write information to or from a recording medium at a high speed even if the recording medium flutters in high frequency by making the objective lens follow wobbling. <P>SOLUTION: A recording medium drive unit is provided with; a casing 6 supported displaceably in a focusing direction to follow fluttering of the recording medium 1; the objective lens 15 supported by the casing 6 displaceably in the focusing direction to focus outgoing light 11 from a light source 10 on the recording medium 1; a light receiving element 17 to convert reflective light 16 from the recording medium 1 to a tracking signal and a focusing signal; and an actuator 18 which is disposed on the casing 6, controlled based on the focusing signal and drives the objective lens 15 in the focusing direction. Consequently, it is possible to make the casing 6 together with the objective lens 15 follow the fluttering of the recording medium 1 even if the recording medium 1 flutters in high frequency.
