PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit a car navigation system with a communicating function from executing downloading map information from a server when a user does not need it. SOLUTION: The system is made up so that the user can set and select whether the user permits or not downloading the map information into a vehicle from the server during the travel. When next map information is required, a map is displayed by using the next map information in the case it is previously downloaded into a memory card (step 101-106). In the case that the next map information is not downloaded previously, and downloading the map information is permitted, it is downloaded from the server and written into the memory card so as to be enable to use it (step 101, 107-109). In the case downloading is not permitted, a wide area map which is previously stored in the memory card, is used, enlarged and displayed by reducing its scale factor (step 107, 110).
