The display comprises a matrix of M x N pixels, each comprising at least one element (21, 22, 23) rotatable about a mechanical axis in the form of a sphere with two visually-distinct hemispheres. The hemispheres are made of conductive material separated by a dielectric layer, one hemisphere being supplied with a high voltage and the other a low voltage. Each sphere has at least two associated conductive plates, so that application of a potential to the plates causes rotation of the sphere and a change in the color of that pixel. The hemispheres are energized via respective conductive axial supports. Switching of the potentials applied to the associated plate electrodes is preferably performed by CMOS transistors. The hemispheres may be colored black and white for a monochrome display or groups of three spheres may colored red, green, and blue to make up a pixel for a full-color display. In a typical case, using construction similar to that of a micro-mirror display with spheres of diameter 100 micrometers separated by 250 micrometers from adjacent spheres, a screen with dimensions 20 cm x 15 cm may have a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels.
