PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dry-type picture display device having a quick response performance, which is simple in structure, inexpensive, and excellent in stability. SOLUTION: This is the picture display device provided with a picture display screen for displaying a picture by filling two kinds of particles differing in color and electrification property between two substrates (1, 2) one of which is at least transparent, and applying an electrostatic field to the particles from an electrode pair constituted of the electrodes arranged on the respective substrates, to make the particles flight-move by the Coulomb force or the like; the display screen is provided with matrix electrodes formed by arranging the electrode pair (3, 4) in a matrix form; display driving is performed by applying a high potential VH or a low potential VL to each electrode constituting the matrix electrodes; and each electrode is connected to an intermediate potential V<SB>0</SB>between VH and VL via a low impedance when these potentials are not applied thereto.
