PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit over-shifting of a transmission shaft by a simple structure. SOLUTION: The transmission can switch the operating condition of the vehicle according to the turning motion of the vehicle to the standard four-wheel driving condition, when front and rear wheels are driven by the driving force from a drive source 2 via a transmission system inside a transmission housing 3 so that the rotation speed of front wheels 14 is nearly the same as that of rear wheels 15, and to the front wheel acceleration condition, when the rotation speed of the front wheels 14 is faster than that of the rear wheels 15. The transmission consists of a transmission shaft 80 to move in a prescribed space in the direction of the center of axis, a staged transmission mechanism (comprising gears 72, 73, 76, 77, etc.), mounted around the transmission shaft 80, and an engagement mechanism (comprising a key-shifting claw 70, lock grooves 72a, 73a, etc.), to extend/contract when the transmission shaft 80 is moved, and also has an inhibiting member (comprising projections 55a, 80a and 90a) for inhibiting the movement of the transmission shaft 80 exceeding the prescribed space on one end side or on the other end side of the transmission shaft 80.
