PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device for a microwave electrodeless discharge lamp which has a uniform temperature distribution over the tube wall thereof, and is compact and efficient. SOLUTION: The lighting device for a microwave electrodeless discharge lamp comprises a magnetron 1 generating microwave power, a box-shape coupling waveguide 3, a coaxial cable 4 one end of which is coupled to the coupling waveguide 3, a compact circularly polarized wave planar antenna 8 with a high permittivity of single point feed-type coupled to the other end of the coaxial cable 4, a cylindrical microwave cavity resonator 5 in which the planar antenna 8 is disposed, a supporting pole 7 mounted on the bottom of the resonator 5, and an electrodeless discharge lamp 6 fixed in place on the supporting pole 7.
