PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing method and an image processing apparatus capable of properly discriminating a type of an original with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: An image discrimination section 3 obtains average saturation and average luminance by each block set by each prescribed pixel on the basis of a luminance signal and a color difference signal received from an image input section 1. Then the image processing apparatus generates a histogram by the average saturation and the average luminance to discriminate a type of the original by a ratio of frequency within a prescribed luminance range.
