It is intended to disclose a novel galectin; a polynucleotide encoding the same; a vector and a transformant containing the polynucleotide; an antibody against the above galectin; and a method of screening a substance modifying the activity of the above galectin. Use of the galectin, polynucleotide or vector as described above makes it possible to exterminate mites or to treat or prevent mite-mediated infections (for example, rickettsiosis, filariasis, Q fever, African recurrent fever or viral encephalitis).
