A device (10) and method for non-destructively inactivating microorganisms, and more particularly for non-destructively inactivating microorganisms by subjecting a microdispersion (26) of biological or other pharmaceutical material (18) to short-duration, high-intensity pulses of an energetic emission (14) is provided. The microdispersion treatment device (10) comprises an emitter (12); a power supply coupled to the emitter (12); a flow chamber (16) designed to produce a microdispersion (26) of the material (18) across an exposure region such that the material (18) is substantially non-destructively exposed to an emission (14) emitted from the emitter (12); and a collection chamber (22).
