It is intended to provide polymers represented by the following structural formula: -(HC=CR)n- wherein n is an integer of 30 or more; and R represents -C6H4-OCxH2x+1, -C6H4-N=NCOCxH2x+1, -C6H4-NHCOCxH2x+1, o-trifluoromethylphenyl or o-(2-thienyl)phenyl (wherein x is a positive integer; and -C6H4- is an o-, m- or p-phenylene group); having a regular helix structure of the molecular chain and showing a reversible change in absorption and emission spectra and peak wavelength due to a reversible change in the pitch of the helix structure upon stimulation, a solvent-treatment or a change therein.
