An engine block for an IC engine has each cylinder with a separate cylinder head attached to a cylinder sleeve, and made of cast iron. The individual cylinder heads are secured onto the crankcase housing by tie rods each side of the cylinder. The cylinder heads and sleeves can be cast in pairs to simplify the assembly. The crankcase and outer shell of the engine block are made of light alloy casting, with the space between the outer shell and the cylinders connected to the engine coolant circuit.
