A temperature-controlled system (10) for storing or transporting temperature sensitive material is provided which includes a closable housing (12) including means for cooling or heating temperature sensitive material contained therein, and at least one thermal barrier (20) positioned in the housing (12) which contains a phase change material therein. The thermal barrier (20) is positioned in the temperature-controlled system (10) so as protect separate temperature-sensitive material, which is already at a desired temperature from temperature-sensitive material being introduced into the temperature-controlled system (10).
