An adjustable-length support member (20) , such as a motorcycle kickstand, includes a generally-tubular outer member (24) defining a longitudinal bore (26) with at least one recess (28) formed in a surface of the bore (26), and an inner member (42) telescopingly received in the bore (26) of the outer member including a plurality of recesses (46). The support member further includes a tension spring (54) urging the inner member (42) to a retracted position relative to the outer member(42), and at least one gravity-responsive locking member (52) carried within a respective recess of one of the inner (24) and outer (42) members, wherein the locking member (52) is urged by gravity out of engagement with a recess of the other of the other inner (24) and outer (42) members, as the attitude of the two members moves between an operative orientation and a stowage orientation.
