An apparatus 11 for dispersing a fluent material has an initial disperser 30 for breaking a stream of fluent material into discontinuous parts 64. The apparatus has an electrode supply device 41 that provides free electrons that impart a net charge on the discontinuous parts 64 to disperse the discontinuous parts 64. A method is also disclosed in which electrons 268 are directed at a flow of droplets 263 of fluent material to disperse the fluent material.
