A safety mounting for a vertical post has a ground support plate fitted to the bottom of the post and with a retaining spring set between the underside of the ground plate and a cross bar in the lower end of a mounting sleeve set into the ground. A ring fitted to the underside of the ground support plate provides a secure mounting for the spring while the ring locates inside the support sleeve and aligns the post onto the sleeve. The post tilts when struck and the spring returns the post to the vertical when the pressure is removed.
