The glow plug (G1) has heater (30) with ceramic heat generator (33) embedded within a ceramic support (35). The ceramic material in the support contains 22 wt.% of at least one of metal silicide, carbide, boride and nitride. Ratio of resistance of the heat generator at 20degreesC and 1200degreesC is more than or equal to two. Ratio of distance (L) between the tips of heat generator and support, to support diameter (D), is 0.01-0.1.
