<p>A method and apparatus for operating a centrally controlled power distribution system (10) is provided. The power distribution system includes a plurality of circuit breakers (16), each circuit breaker coupled to a single node electronics unit (20), the node electronics unit includes a plurality of processors (72) and a memory (74), and the node electronics unit is communicatively coupled to at least one central control processing unit (24) through an associated network (22). The method includes triggering (702) a first node electronics unit process with a processor interrupt, and triggering (704) a second node electronics unit process with at least one of a background polling of process execution flags (616) and scheduled processor interrupts.
