Process for melting inorganic, non-metallic material from a mixture of specified raw materials comprises separately pre-melting and transferring into a glassy/amorphous state at least one raw material having a different composition to the end composition of the material. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) mixture of specified raw materials used in the above process; and (2) raw material for the above mixture. Preferred Features: The raw material consists of at least two components, preferably two crystalline compounds. The main components are silica (SiO2), boric oxide (B2O3) and/or phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5).
