A window or door frame has a bottom section with a shaped cross member supported on the masonry by a bed of insulating material. The fixed frame has internal compartments for improved thermal insulation and with an outer profiled lip to press onto the top of a windowsill or door tread, which is supported on the masonry by a bed of mortar. The lower edge of the windowsill/door tread is supported on a lower flange of the frame or directly on the mortar bed, forming a recess with the upper lip. The edge of the windowsill/door tread locates on a number of raised spots on the outer wall of the frame.
