Materials, special.-A closure for a container has an enclosed space filled with a mixture of rubber and one or more substances not capable of forming a solution or gel with rubber solvents but capable with other liquids. The sealing material may thus contain equal quantities of rubber, as latex, and a substance forming a sol or gel with water, such as gum or glue, a substance forming a sol or gel with common alcohols or ketones , such as manila gum or both. Fillers such as whiting, bentonite, and karaya gum or other colloid with an acid or alkali, softeners such as glycerine, sugars, and diethylene glycol, and preservatives such as sodium fluoride may also be added. The ingredients are mixed with a fluid such as water which can be dried out after applying to the joint surfaces and before fixing by evacuating the container. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also closures in which the rubber is wholly or in part replaced by aluminium soap or coconut oil or other soap soluble in water, sulphurized corn or other oil, or beeswax saponified with ammonia, the gum or glue by caesin, starch, or sulphonated castor oil, the fillers by pigments or the water by benzol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.</p> |
