VARIABLE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR

PURPOSE: A variable optical attenuator is provided to simplify a fabrication process by adopting a MEMS actuator and driving a shielding layer type variable optical waveguide. CONSTITUTION: A variable optical attenuator includes a transmission fiber(1), a reception fiber(2), a shielding layer(3), and an actuator(4). The transmission fiber(1) is used for transmitting the light. The reception fiber(2) is used for receiving the light. The shielding layer(3) is used for absorbing the light between the transmission fiber(1) and the reception fiber(2) in order to control the amount of the transmitting light. The actuator(4) is used for driving the shielding layer(3). The shielding layer(3) is formed with a silicon material. The shielding layer(3) is composed of a waveguide.
