PURPOSE: A composition containing an ether fraction of Gastrodiae Rhizoma as an effective ingredient is provided. The composition exhibits an antiepileptic effect against temporal lobe epilepsy caused by kainic acid and has excellent effect on protecting nerve cell damage and thus can be effectively used as agent for preventing and treating temporal lobe epilepsy. CONSTITUTION: Gastrodiae Rhizoma is ground and extracted in methanol, the methanol extract thereof is filtered, concentrated and then suspended in 1% carboxylmethyl cellulose. The Gastrodiae Rhizoma ether fraction has an effect on inhibiting nerve injury in a CA1 zone and CA3 zone of hippocampus by kainic acid. A composition containing the ether fraction of Gastrodiae Rhizoma is administered in an amount of 200 to 1,000mg per kg body weight.
