PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and method for suction fixing, by which the optimum setting of a suction region is carried out even if the size of a printed matter (sheet) is not unknown. SOLUTION: The apparatus for suction fixing comprises a suction plate 1a for fixing the printed matter on which a plurality of suction holes 13a-13c are formed, a vacuum pump 18 and a vacuum switch 19 connected to the respective suction holes 13a-13c via respective electromagnetic valves 15-17. In this apparatus for suction fixing, a suction area is expanded stepwise in order by opening the electromagnetic valves 15-17 in order while operating the vacuum pump 18. For every step, the state of the vacuum switch 19 is detected. When the state of the vacuum is not maintained, opening and closing states of the electromagnetic valves 15-17 are set back to the state of a preceding step. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
