PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a methane generation method capable of accurately and automatically grasping and controlling the concentration of an organic acid in an organic substance at a low cost in a simple constitution and provide a device of the same. SOLUTION: When the organic substance 1 supplied to a fermentation tank 111 is fermented and decomposed to generate a methane gas 2, a pH and an alkali concentration of the organic substance 1 in the tank 111 are measured with a pH meter 131 and an alkali concentration meter 132, based on whose results, a controlling device 134 calculates the concentration of the organic acid in the organic substance 1 from the equation C<SB>a</SB>=C<SB>b</SB>/(1+K<SB>1</SB>/[H<SP>+</SP>]), if the concentration of the organic acid stays within a preset stable reaction area, a control valve 121 of an organic substance supplier 112 is controlled so as to reduce a supplied quantity of the organic substance 1 to the tank 111. It is, however, provided C<SB>a</SB>is the concentration of the organic acid, C<SB>b</SB>is the concentration of an alkali, K<SB>1</SB>is the primary dissociation constant of a carbonate ion, and [H<SP>+</SP>] is the hydrogen-ion concentration (pH).
