PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing fine, granular titanium oxide which exhibits photocatalytic activity, to provide a titanium oxide precursor as the raw material which is suitable for the production of the titanium oxide, and to provide a method of producing the precursor. SOLUTION: The titanium oxide precursor consists of oxygen-containing titanium compounds other than anatase type titanium oxide (such as titanium hydroxide and titanium peroxide). When subjected to differential thermal analysis concurrently with thermogravimetric analysis under the condition of a temperature rising rate of 20°C/min, the titanium oxide precursor exhibits weight loss in a thermogravimetric curve at a temperature giving the maximum exothermic peak of a thermogram in the range of 30 to 500°C. The production method for the titanium oxide precursor and the method of producing titanium oxide in which the titanium oxide precursor is fired, are provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
