PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process in one step with a safe and simple operation in a good yield for the preparation of a hydrogen reduction compound of e.g. 1, 12-dodecane diamine or dodecane dinitrile useful as e.g. a nylon 1212 intermediate from a novel substance of 4, 8-dodecadiene dinitrile. SOLUTION: The process for hydrogen reduction of 4, 8-dodecadiene dinitrile is characterized by contacting the 4, 8-dodecadiene dinitrile with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogen reduction catalyst. Above all, the hydrogen reduction catalyst is preferably a transition metal catalyst and more preferably at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of a palladium-based catalyst, a platinum-based catalyst and a nickel-based catalyst.
