PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately measure the cut length of a sheet material conveyed by a conveying means even when the sheet material on the conveying means is inclined with respect to a conveying direction. SOLUTION: After detecting a planographic printing plate 36 by a phototube sensor 120A, phototube sensors 114, 116, 118 detect the tip side edge part 36A of the planographic printing plate 36. At this time, the tilt angle of the planographic printing plate 36 to the conveying direction is determined by the output timing of detection signals from the phototube sensors 116, 118. When the phototube sensor 114 detects the tip side edge part 36A, first CCD cameras 96, 98 are operated synchronously with the detection. The image pickup data of the tip side edge part 36A and rear end part 36B are thereby outputted from the CCD cameras. On the basis of the image pickup data, the dimension of the planographic printing plate 36 along the conveying direction is computed, and the cut length is computed on the basis of the computed value of the dimension and the tilt angle of the planographic printing plate 36.
