PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus which controls the light emitting quantity of an AF auxiliary light to avoid emitting light more than a necessary. SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises an auxiliary light-emitting means for irradiating an object at an AF operation mode, and an auxiliary light quantity control means for controlling the luminosity of the auxiliary light-emitting means. For a macro photography, the apparatus comprises an auxiliary light quantity control means for controlling the light quantity of the auxiliary light- emitting means. The apparatus comprises an auxiliary light-emitting means for irradiating an object in AF operation mode, a means for detecting the focal distance of a photography optical system, and an auxiliary light quantity control means for controlling the luminosity of the auxiliary light-emitting means according to the focal distance detected by the focal distance detecting means. The focal distance detecting means detects the focal distance, to determine the F-number of the photography optical system from the detected focal distance, and a light-emitting quantity setting means controls the light-emitting quantity of the light-emitting means according to the determined F number.
