<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a unit identification apparatus capable of preventing flowing of rush current by suppressing the peak of fusing current without requiring a switching element for controlling fuse fusing current and to provide a method for controlling the same. <P>SOLUTION: The unit identification apparatus includes a fuse F1 in a replaceable unit 3 to judge the unit to be a new product when the fuse F1 of the unit 3 mounted to an apparatus main body 1 is not fused. The unit identification apparatus is provided with: a fusing circuit 7 for energizing the fuse F1 to fuse the fuse; a power source 6 for supplying power to the fusing circuit 7; a current detection means 8 for detecting the magnitude of current flowing through the fusing circuit 7; and a detection means 9 for detecting whether or not unit 3 is new on the basis of the detecting result of the current.
